Administering your Account
1. How do I access my Control Panel?
To access your control panel, enter http://yourdomain.com/menu/ in the location bar of your browser; you will need to replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain name. Upon setting up an account with us, you should familiarize yourself with your Control Panel. It is a very powerful administrative tool that gives you complete control over your account.
2. My site is not working. What's up?
Check your www directory to make sure it contains a directory index file. Our servers are configured to look for the following directory index files, in the order shown here: default.htm, index.phtml, index.pht, index.cgi, index.shtml, index.html, welcome.cgi, welcome.html, index.htm and index.php. The first filename encountered will be used as the directory index file.
3. How do I transfer my domain to your servers?
Actually, domain transfer is a bit of a misnomer. What you need to do is update the name server records listed in your domain registration so they point to LinuxWebHost. When you confirm that your website is displaying properly (by entering the IP number assigned to the domain in your web browser), then you must present our name servers to your domain registrar, who will then point your domain to our server. Our name servers are ns.the-web-host.com and ns2.the-web-host.com. If we register your new domain, then you will not need to do anything.
4. Can I upgrade my hosting plan at any time?
Yes. To upgrade your hosting plan, please click the Upgrade CP icon in your control panel. If you wish to downgrade your plan or add option packages, please submit your request to sales@linuxwebhost.com or support@linuxwebhost.com.
5. How do I manage my email users? How do I set up mail forwarding?
To add or delete POP boxes, and set up mail forwarding, go to the Mail Manager application in your control panel.
6. What do autoresponders do and are they included? How many?
An autoresponder is similar to an alias, but it also sends an automatic email reply back to the sender. You can have an unlimited number of autoresponders for no additional cost. This is configurable in your Control Panel.
7. What programs can be used to access email (Outlook, Netscape mail, etc.)?
Any POP client—or program that downloads files from our server to your computer—can be used. You can also use mail user agents that run on our servers (such as Pine), with a special configuration.
8. What is an email alias and is it unlimited?
An email alias means that if you send mail to webmaster@yourname.com (or whatever address you set up), email sent to that address is aliased (forwarded) to whomever needs to receive it, be it one person or multiple people. This is especially useful for individuals running small companies that want their work email messages forwarded to their private email addresses. To set up an alias, go to the Mail Manager application in your control panel. You can click on any of the email accounts on the left and edit them. Once you have clicked on an email account, you should check the "Forward email addressed to address(es) outside your domain" checkbox and then supply the email addresses to forward to in the box below. It is unlimited, so set up as many as you need!
9. What are CGI scripts?
CGI (Common Gateway Interface) scripts are used to provide things like counters, form responses, guest books, and many other things. We give you full CGI access at no extra charge! You can write your own scripts, install third party scripts, or use one of our preinstalled scripts.
10. What is a virtual domain?
A virtual domain allows you to have a personal domain (e.g., www.yourname.com) without having to install expensive server hardware and software. With a virtual domain, you utilize our server's storage space, however, you are still professionally represented via your own personal Internet web address domain name (www.yourname.com) and by your own personal email address domain name (you@yourname.com).
11. Can I access my domain address with or without the "www"?
Yes, you will be able to access the domain address with or without the "www" in front of the domain name.
12. Is there a limit to how many email accounts can be forwarded?
The only limit is the quantity of email accounts your current plan has.
13. Can I run cgi scripts outside my cgi-bin directory?
No, cgi scripts must be kept in the cgi-bin directory and run from there.
14. Do I have unlimited access to update my pages?
Yes. You can edit your site any time, day or night.
